Where Are You Getting Ready? Planning your Wedding Morning for the Bride and Bridesmaids

We’ve all seen the beautiful images of the bride and her bridesmaids getting ready on the morning of the wedding. What you don’t see in those photos is the careful planning that goes on behind-the-scenes to make sure that the morning of the wedding goes smoothly and is the delightful, memorable experience that should be.

When it comes to deciding where the ladies of the bridal party are going to get ready, there are a number of options, all with their share of pros and cons. Some of the most common locations to get ready are at the bride’s home, at someone else’s home, a hotel, or at the salon. Often, when you go to salon for hair and makeup, the bridal party will still need somewhere else to go after the salon where they can put on their gowns.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding on a ‘getting ready’ location, and planning your wedding morning:

Transportation – How long it will take to get to the ceremony venue from where you’re getting ready? Who is in charge of driving? Will you rent a car or hire a limo? What will the cost be? Transportation is often overlooked and has the potential to add stress to the wedding day, when you risk being stuck in traffic or waiting for people to arrive.

Lighting – If your photographer is going to be there to capture your ‘getting ready’ photos, you will want to make the chosen location is well-lit, preferably with natural lighting.

Who’s going to be there? – Do you want your mom or dad to see you first, in private? Do you want photos of that? Do you want your sister there, or your kids? Make sure that some planning is done beforehand to make sure that everyone you to see you before the ceremony (or the first look) will arrive at the right time.

Timing – All too often, photographers arrive at the ‘getting ready’ location only to wait and wait some more while people arrive, or things get started. In order to get the most out of your photographer’s time, it’s important to have put some thought into timing. Confirm with your makeup artist and hairstylist how long it will take for all of your bridal party to be styled, and make sure you ask for a generous estimate – things often take longer than expected on such an important day. Plan for extra time!

Because we want to make the wedding day as smooth as possible for our brides and their bridesmaids, we have an on-site bridal suite for getting ready. It’s easiest if the bridal party gets ready right at the ceremony location! That way, less time and money will be spent on transportation, and there will be more time for everyone to relax and enjoy the wedding morning – just the way it should be!
