LIBERTY, MISSOURI INFORMATION

History

Founded in 1822, Liberty is one of the oldest cities in the state of Missouri. Through all of those years, Liberty has been a center of activity and commerce in the area and the seat of county government of Clay County, Missouri. Many colorful figures grace the history of Liberty, including Mormon leader Joseph Smith, temperance leader Carrie Nation, and the infamous Jesse James who performed his first daylight bank robbery in downtown Liberty, Missouri.

Location

Today Liberty is an integral part of metropolitan Kansas City, but still retains its charm as a small Midwestern city. Access to the excellent area freeway system puts Liberty just 15 minutes from Kansas City International Airport and downtown Kansas City, Missouri, as well as from Truman Sports Complex, home of the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs.

Local Attractions

In addition to having the metropolitan area at its doorstep, Liberty has its own Symphony Orchestra, Civic Theatre, main library, and a 50,000 square-foot multi-purpose community center. William Jewell College is nationally recognized for its liberal arts programs and its Fine Arts Series which includes internationally known performers.

City-Wide Services

Liberty has a Mayor and Council form of government with a professional City Administrator. Public services are outstanding, including a Fire Department which has an average response time of 2.3 minutes within the city, and a Police Department which maintains a crime rate 36% below the average for Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the United States. The Liberty Hospital is located just seven minutes from Heartland Meadows and provides high quality, cost efficient, comprehensive health care to the 175,000 residents in its service area.

Education

Outstanding public education is provided to Liberty residents through the Liberty Public School District. The district has over 5,600 students and over 750 certified and non-certified personnel. The district maintains the highest rating given by the state of Missouri.
